"NECO Registrar Pledges Zero Tolerance for Exam Malpractices in 2023"

During the commencement of the 2023 Senior School Examinations, the Registrar of the National Examinations Council (NECO), Prof. Dantani Wushishi, pledged that the council will no longer tolerate behaviours jeopardizing their examinations' credibility, such as examination malpractices.

Speaking to journalists in Jos after touring several schools to monitor the current SSCE examinations in Plateau State, Wushishi said, "We have earlier visited other states and interacted with pivotal members. Thus far, the examination has been running as planned in all locations visited. There haven't been any significant issues concerning the examination's conduct." He added.

According to Wushishi, delivering the materials from their end has been smooth and the 2023 examination can be touted as the most successful. He went further to say that  efforts to curb examination malpractices has made NECO launch awareness campaigns, including sponsoring national media jingles and internally monitoring exams.

"Various forms of malpractice exist and have corresponding penalties and the level of malpractice involvement by candidates, supervisors, and staff will be evaluated upon the completion of examinations” Wushishi stated.

Wushishi admitted that the ongoing economic challenges have slightly decreased the number of students registering for the SSCE exams. According to him, a total of 1,205,888 students have registered this year, a decline from the 1,209,000 recorded last year. Male and female candidates number 621,74 and 584, 814 respectively.

“ The drop in registration is linked to the economic hardshippreventin state governments from registering more candidates” He added. However, Wushishi is hopeful as indebted states are making progress in paying the N3.3 billion owed to NECO as of last year.

During this tour, schools including Air Force Boys secondary school, Jos, Kings and Queens Academy, and Emmanuel International College were visited by the Registrar.
